Burundi's President Intensifies Crackdown on Countries LGBTQ+ Community.

Burundi's President Evariste Ndayishimiye has intensified the crackdown on sexual minorities, urging citizens to stone gay individuals and reinforcing the oppression faced by the LGBTQ+ community. In a recent public session in Burundi's east, Ndayishimiye stated that accepting homosexuality would bring a curse to the country, proposing the idea of leading gay people to a stadium for public stoning, considering it a justified act. He characterized homosexuality as an import from the West.

This disturbing rhetoric follows a trend of increasing intolerance toward the LGBTQ+ community in the region. Uganda recently enacted a law imposing the death penalty for specific same-sex offenses and substantial prison terms for others. The move drew widespread condemnation from Western governments and human rights advocates. In response, the United States implemented sanctions, including travel restrictions and the removal of Uganda from a tariff-free trade deal. The World Bank also suspended future loans to Uganda in protest.

Similar anti-gay legislation is being advocated by some lawmakers in Kenya, South Sudan, and Tanzania. These politicians assert that their efforts align with African values and sovereignty, positioning them against what they perceive as Western influence on the matter. The situation underscores a concerning trend of eroding LGBTQ+ rights and the imposition of severe measures against sexual minorities in several African nations.
